6 habits that create more opportunities over time

Read time: 7 minutes

A while ago, someone made a comment that I always seem to “be in the right place at the right time.”

It made me smile, because from the outside, it can look like luck. But when I think about most of my “high points”, they actually weren’t random at all.

I don’t see luck as something that just happens to you. More often, it’s something you create through the choices you make, the habits you build, and your willingness to take consistent action over time, even when it feels tiring or uncomfortable.

So then the question is if luck isn’t just chance… how do you actually create more of it?

Here are six things that have definitely made opportunities more likely to come my way:

1. Share your work openly

Whether it’s a podcast, a guide, a LinkedIn post, a newsletter, or anything else, creating something gives people a way to find and understand you.

I’ve written on LinkedIn consistently for over a year, and published this newsletter weekly since the start of 2025.

And as a result, I’ve had partnerships, investors, clients, and connections that just wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

When you publish regularly, people start to understand how you think. And sometimes someone you’ve never met resonates with your work, and reaches out.

2. Say yes to things that feel uncomfortable

A couple of years ago I made a conscious effort to lean into opportunities that felt outside my comfort zone. Coaching, speaking on panels, even an ad campaign that put my face on billboards across London (!).

Each and every time, there was discomfort. But those experiences led to new relationships, invitations, and many opportunities.

It’s not about saying yes to everything. It’s about recognising the difference between something that isn’t right for you, and something that pushes you.

3. Make writing a key part of your routine

Writing has become one of the most valuable tools I have. It helps me clarify what I think, process what I’m learning, and make better decisions. Some of my biggest shifts, both strategically and personally, have come from writing things down.

And it doesn’t have to be public. It can be writing notes or journalling, but over time, it sharpens your thinking — and when you share it, it helps others too.

4. Connect with people, even when it’s inconvenient

If I’m honest, I rarely feel like going to events, dinners, or meet-ups. But the times I’ve pushed myself to show up have led to some of the most valuable connections in my life and career. Friendships, mentors, collaborations, paid work and more.

Conversations create momentum. And that momentum only happens when you’re willing to go out and actually be in the room.

5. Stay in touch with people (without any agenda)

Most opportunities don’t come from a single interaction, they come from staying in touch. I try to check in with people regularly. Sometimes to share something helpful. Sometimes just to say well done or reconnect. Those moments have led to podcast invitations, collaborations, and client work.

People are busy. They don’t always reply straight away. But keeping the relationship warm often leads to the next opportunity.

6. Be selective about what you consume

This is a big one for me; there’s an overwhelming amount of information available now. I’ve found that being intentional about what I read, watch, and listen to makes a big difference.

The right inputs shape your thinking and generate better ideas. So now, instead of scrolling aimlessly, I try to notice whether something leaves me feeling energised or drained.

The takeaway

On their own, these actions might seem small, but over time, they add up.

When you look closely at people who seem “lucky”, you’ll often find they’ve been doing some version of this consistently for years.

Most people start, but stop too soon.

If you keep showing up, creating, connecting, and following through, opportunities become far more likely to appear.

And what looks like luck from the outside is usually anything but.

The lessons that only mistakes can teach you
7 lessons I learned the hard way Read time: 7 minutes A few years ago, I walked out of an important meeting feeling like I’d completely messed it up. I had spent ages preparing, but in completely the wrong way. I’d totally misread the room, I’d overcomplicated my message, and I left with that horrible feeling that I had blown it. At the time, I felt like a total failure. But looking back, that ...
The most valuable investment most people overlook
4 ways to invest in yourself and create long-term advantage Read time: 4 minutes A few years ago, I reached a point where something didn’t quite feel right. On paper, everything looked great: I had a stable job as a doctor and was progressing along the traditional path. But underneath that, there was a sense that I wasn’t really evolving. I wanted more from my career and life, even though I cou...
Why your LinkedIn posts aren’t working
5 common mistakes (and how to fix them) Read time: 5 minutes About two years ago, I would spend hours writing a LinkedIn post. I’d edit it, tweak it, rewrite sections, then reread it about 20 times. At that point, I was proud of it. So I’d post it — and get about three likes. I remember thinking maybe LinkedIn just wasn’t my thing. But if posting consistently for two years has taught me one thi...
