7 simple tactics that actually worked for me

Read time: 5 minutes

A year ago, I was still finding my feet on LinkedIn.

Today, I’m closing in on 80,000 followers.

The question I get asked more than any other?

"How did you grow your audience?"

The truth is, it started slowly. As a founder, I knew I needed to build visibility online and strengthen my personal brand—but I had absolutely no clue where to begin.

When I eventually started posting, my content was sporadic and not particularly compelling, and engagement was pretty minimal.

But over time, through a mix of practice, coaching, and a lot of trial and error, I began to figure it out.

I’ve taken a step back recently to reflect on what’s really moved the needle—and if I had to boil it down, it comes down to reach.

If you want to reach more people, the key is simple: have a strategy, write clearly, and apply a few practical tips to boost engagement.

7 simple tactics to help you grow on LinkedIn

1. Nail the opening two lines

I believe the first two lines are the most critical part of any post. They decide whether somebody clicks “see more” or whether they keep scrolling.

If they scroll past, the post is likely to go nowhere.

Go with something that grabs attention or creates curiosity, e.g. a striking stat, a bold claim, or a shared frustration.

2. Prioritise readability

Dense blocks of text can be off-putting to readers. Attention is short and if a post looks like hard work to read, they’re likely to skip it.

Use lots of white space, short paragraphs, and formatting tools (bullet points, arrows, emojis, etc.) to make your post easy on the eye. Keep your language simple and sentences short. If it’s easy to skim then it’s easier to digest.

3. Give more to get more

Posts that offer genuine value tend to perform best.

Short posts can work, but longer, meatier content—whether it's a personal story, a useful framework, or a unique insight—often holds people’s attention for longer (which LinkedIn tends to reward).

Aim to deliver value that makes the reader think, feel, or learn something new.

4. Invite discussion, not just attention

The best posts don’t just broadcast information, they invite a response.

Ask a question that gets people thinking, encourages debate or starts conversation amongst your audience.

When you create a space for dialogue, your content becomes more engaging, and therefore more visible.

5. Don’t post and ghost

One of the earliest lessons I learned: it’s not enough to just hit “post”.

Social media is a dialogue. Stick around after publishing—respond to comments, ask follow-up questions, and show appreciation for those who engage.

Not only does this boost the algorithm, but when you engage with people they feel seen and heard, and invest more time in you.

6. Build momentum with consistency

One thing that really helped me to grow sustainably was committing to a regular posting cadence. When your audience knows when to expect you, they’re more likely to look out for your posts, and engage with them.

Also, consistency builds trust. And trust builds engagement.

7. Get involved beyond your own posts

If you want more reach, don’t just focus on your own content, join conversations elsewhere too.

Leaving thoughtful comments on other people’s posts can lead to profile views, new followers, and reciprocal engagement.

The more active you are across the platform, the more visible you become.

These are the strategies that have worked well for me—and if you're looking to build a stronger presence on LinkedIn, I hope they’ll help you too. Do get in touch if you’d like help growing your audience—through ready-to-post content or personalised coaching.

Stop trying to plan everything
The best opportunities are often unexpected Read time: 5 minutes Some of the biggest changes in my life weren't exactly part of the plan. I didn't go to medical school expecting to leave medicine. I didn't move into consulting thinking I'd eventually build a business. And I definitely didn't start posting on LinkedIn expecting it to lead to some of the opportunities it has. Looking back, I ofte...
Some experience has an expiry date
Why years of expertise can actually work against you Read time: 5 minutes You always hear people being described as having "X years of experience". It sounds impressive, and in most cases it is. But I've started wondering whether the number of years you've done something can actually be a hinderance. Because there's a difference between having 20 years of experience and having the same experien...
AI is rewarding a completely different skill set
And it's not the one you think Read time: 5 minutes For decades, the playbook for career longevity was predictable: Become an expert > gain experience > move up the ladder > repeat. Of course, this sequence is still relevant, but AI is changing which skills create the biggest advantage; which propel you forward faster than others. I truly believe, the biggest point of leverage is now much less ...
