How I’d use LinkedIn if I wasn’t trying to sell anything
What most people miss about the platform

Most people think LinkedIn is solely for posting content, growing an audience, or selling a service to others. And of course, it's great for all of those things.
But actually, if that was all stripped away, I’d still use it. Because what I've realised is that, at its core, LinkedIn isn’t a content or sales platform. It’s a platform that helps you create leverage in multiple different forms.
If I wasn’t trying to sell anything (which many of us aren't), here’s exactly how I’d use it:
1. To build a safety net before I need one
Most people only become active on LinkedIn when something changes or goes wrong — redundancy, career pivot, business failure, for example.
But by then, you’re starting from zero.
One thing I've learnt is that, used properly, LinkedIn gives you so many options. By creating visibility and making sure people know who you are, it gives you leverage before you ever need anything. And in times of trouble, that changes everything.
2. To create a record of my thoughts and ideas
Your CV shows what you’ve done, but your LinkedIn content shows your thinking. Which is a very different signal.
When you consistently share ideas, it helps people build a picture of your judgement, perspective, and values.
And that’s what people actually buy into.
3. To connect with people I may need later
I really believe some of the most valuable and powerful use of LinkedIn comes from the 'quiet' connections you make to others :
- Reaching out to people
- Engaging with their content
- Staying lightly in touch over time
Then when you do need to speak, you’re not a stranger, and that makes things so much easier.
4. To learn what the smartest people are paying attention to
One thing I've learnt: your feed is actually a filter. If you build it intentionally, it becomes one of the best sources of insight and knowledge.
- What are people in your space talking about?
- What are they worried about?
- What are they building towards next?
That’s actually quite hard, if not impossible, to find anywhere else at the speed and volume that linkedIn offers.
5. To build a solid reputation (before I need to use it)
Reputation is one of those things that compounds; everyone has one, and you don’t notice it day to day, but over time, people begin to associate you with certain things:
- Your thoughts and skills
- Where you add value
- What you stand for
So when opportunities arise, your name is already the obvious choice.
6. To stay top of mind (but without forcing it)
You don’t need to post every day.
But there's no doubt that when you show up consistently, you stay in people’s awareness. And that matters more than most people realise.
Why? Because whether we like it or not opportunities often come from familiarity, not just capability.
The takeaway
LinkedIn isn’t just for content creators or people trying to sell something.
Used well, it’s such a great long-term asset. It has been for me, and so many others I know. It builds trust, familiarity, and gives you options.
