6 overlooked strategies that actually move the needle

Read time: 5 minutes

When we think of building a personal brand, the first thing that comes to mind is posting on LinkedIn or another social platform. While creating content is valuable, it’s just one piece of the puzzle.

The reality is, it’s not just about being visible—it’s about being credible and connected.

I know this firsthand. A year ago, I’d spend a lot of time writing LinkedIn posts, but I rarely networked in person or even via direct messages. The result was that people only knew the online version of me—which ends up being quite a one-dimensional representation.

Last summer, I made a conscious effort to show up in more spaces: I joined communities, went to events, participated in panels, and accepted podcast opportunities.

My brand became richer and more authentic because people got to experience different elements of who I was.

So, what else contributes to a strong personal brand beyond just posting online? Here are five strategies I’ve used:

1. Public speaking: panels, keynotes, and podcasts

One of the quickest ways to establish authority is through public speaking, which can come in various forms:

  • Panel discussions
  • Conference keynotes
  • Guest appearances on podcasts

Unlike social media, speaking engagements allow personality, tone, and expertise to come through in a more unscripted way, making your brand feel more human and relatable.

Sharing your journey and insights in real time also helps build trust and credibility.

That said, I know people hesitate to pursue speaking engagements as they feel they’re not “expert enough.” I was once one of those people! The reality is, if you have insights, experience, or a perspective, you have value to offer. Speaking at smaller events or internal company panels first helps build confidence for bigger stages.

Actions you can take:

  • Apply to speak at industry conferences or meetups; contact the organiser or look for a sign up form on the website.
  • Reach out to podcast hosts in your niche and pitch a topic you’re passionate about.

2. Thought leadership and long-form content

Short-form content has its place, but more in-depth articles and newsletters really help to establish yourself as a thought leader. They’re a good way to show expertise, and a unique perspective, something that’s harder to convey on social media.

It also improves SEO, making it easier for people to find you when searching for topics in your industry.

The key is consistency and depth. Don’t just write for the sake of it; focus on topics where you bring real insight. You can share lessons learned, industry trends, case studies, and personal stories.

Over time, your writing ideally becomes an asset that works for you, and attracts opportunities.

Actions you can take:

  • Start a blog or newsletter and commit to posting regularly. It’s not easy, but it pays off!
  • Write guest articles for established industry publications.
  • Repurpose long-form content into shorter posts, or use your shorter posts as ideas for long form content.

3. Networking & building real connections

I’ve come to realise that a strong personal brand isn’t just about who knows you exist, it’s about who actually trusts you. And trust is built through meaningful conversation, whether in person or in DMs.

For me, engaging in these conversations has led to some great opportunities.

And it doesn’t need to feel forced or transactional: be genuinely curious about others, ask insightful questions, and give value, even when you don’t need anything.

Over time, a well-nurtured network will naturally advocate for you, both publicly and behind closed doors.

Actions you can take:

  • Attend industry events and actively follow up with new connections.
  • Engage in LinkedIn DMs and build relationships, not just transactions.
  • Join professional communities or mastermind groups for deeper connections.

4. Collaborations and partnerships

This year, I’ve really come to understand the power of collaboration. Your brand doesn’t have to be built alone; partnering with other people can amplify reach and credibility. So far in 2025, I’ve partnered with three organisations on projects and events. It’s been great for gaining access to new audiences, whilst also introducing me to new ideas and perspectives.

Collaboration can be as simple as:

  • Co-hosting an event
  • Doing LinkedIn Lives with peers
  • Contributing content to someone’s platform

The more you engage with others within the space, the more you become known in your industry.

Actions you can take:

  • Partner with someone on a webinar or workshop, or contribute to collaborative projects in your industry.
  • Support and promote others (e.g. repost their content) and they’ll likely do the same for you.

5. Hosting your own events or webinars

Speaking at events is valuable, but hosting your own is even better. I’m still working on this one! When you organise and lead discussions, you’re more likely to be seen as a go-to in your field. It also allows you to curate content that aligns directly with your expertise and attracts the right audience.

And it doesn’t have to be a big undertaking—a simple live Q&A, panel discussion, or workshop can be really effective. Over time, you build a reputation as someone who brings value to others.

Actions you can take:

  • Host a regular Zoom webinar on a particular niche.
  • Organise small networking meetups or virtual roundtables.

In summary

Personal brand is a combination of visibility, credibility, and connection. Social media is a great starting point but relying on one channel is limiting.

A well-rounded brand has different elements: public speaking, thought leadership, networking, collaboration. Diversifying my approach has expanded my reach, deepened relationships, and opened doors to new opportunities.

So, when thinking about your personal brand, ask: How can I show up in more ways, in more places, and with more depth?

The more well-rounded your strategy, the stronger and more resilient your brand will be.
