4 ways to invest in yourself for lasting advantage

Read time: 4 minutes

A few years back, I found myself at a crossroads.

On the surface, everything seemed fine—I had a steady job as a doctor, and was moving up the ladder in the typical way.

But deep down, I had this nagging feeling that I wasn’t growing. I wanted more, though I didn’t yet know what “more” even looked like.

So I started with something simple: dedicating an hour each day to learning, experimenting, and exploring outside of work. Over time, that commitment transformed the direction of my life.

Looking back, I realise the most important investment I ever made wasn’t financial—it was in myself.

And in today’s world, that’s not just nice to have, it’s vital. The pace of change is relentless. Entire industries are shifting. AI, digital platforms, and new ways of working are rewriting things for everyone.

Those who thrive will be the ones who consider themselves to be their greatest asset—and act accordingly.

Through my own journey, I’ve come to see that self-investment:

  • Unlocks opportunities
  • Increases your influence
  • Protects your future career
  • Gives you freedom to shape your own path

Here are four practical ways you can start investing in yourself today:

1. Expand your skill set

The fastest way to stay relevant is to keep learning. The world rewards those who bring new (or unusual combinations of) skills to the table. Public speaking, coding, storytelling, data literacy—every added skill strengthens your advantage. Over the past year, I’ve focused on improving my writing, and doors have opened that wouldn’t have otherwise. My dad is 76 and just completed an AI course—it’s never too late to learn!

Try this: Choose one skill that excites you or aligns with where you’d like to head. Commit 30 minutes a day to a free course or video series.

2. Create a visible presence

Opportunities today often flow towards those who are seen and known. Personal branding isn’t about ego, it’s about shaping how others see your strengths and values. Whether you want to switch careers, grow a side project, or just be recognised for your expertise, being visible is a big advantage.

Try this: Pick a platform you enjoy (LinkedIn, X, TikTok, or even a blog) and post once a week about something you’re learning or reflecting on. Don’t aim for perfection—consistency is what matters.

If you’d like support with this through my coaching services, reply to this email—I’d be happy to chat.

3. Learn to sell yourself

I’ve learned that no matter where your career takes you, you need to be able to communicate your value—whether in a job interview, pitching an idea, or selling a product. From what I’ve observed, people who can confidently articulate their worth create the most exciting opportunities. It’s a skill I’m still working on myself!

Try this: Read one book on sales or marketing—Sell Like Crazy by Sabri Suby is a great place to start, for example. Then, take one small step to practise—like updating your LinkedIn profile or writing a post that highlights your strengths.

4. Build a strong network

Skills matter, but people open doors. The right connections don’t just lead to opportunities—they expose you to new ideas and perspectives, accelerating your growth. I’ve found that the relationships I’ve nurtured have often been just as valuable as the skills I’ve learned.

Try this: Reach out to one person each week—someone you admire, someone you’d like to learn from, or even an old colleague you’ve lost touch with. A short message to reconnect or share appreciation can go a long way.

Where you are now is just the starting point. The future you want is built step by step, through daily investments in yourself

The exciting thing? You don’t need dramatic leaps. You just need consistency.

Give it a year, and you’ll be amazed by how much you’ve grown.

The people getting ahead aren’t working harder
What actually creates career leverage now Read time: 6 minutes Years ago, the belief was that success was directly tied to a person's willing to "work hard": longer hours, more sacrifice, more pressure, and ultimately more output. And for me, medicine reinforced that belief. There's a strong culture of endurance in that career: long shifts, exams, audits, maybe a PhD. You keep going, keep pushi...

Why your LinkedIn still isn’t leading to anything
5 reasons your visibility isn’t translating into opportunity Quick note: I’ve opened up a small number of LinkedIn audits for May.
