What AI can’t replace (but the world still needs)
The 5 human skills that will keep you relevant
Read time: 6 minutes
As a parent to small children, I find myself thinking a lot about the kind of world they’ll grow up in, especially in terms of technology, careers, and lifestyle.
It’s mind-blowing to think how much has changed in the last decade. And more importantly, how the speed of change is increasing.
We can all agree that AI, for example, is reshaping industries and creating new business models. In the near future I envision that most companies will:
- Operate with just a laptop
- Tap into a global talent pool
- Stay lean and agile in size
The idea of a lifelong, stable job is dissolving and the shift toward portfolio careers, side hustles and more fluid work lives will continue.
In this landscape I believe we can't rely solely on technical skills, as they can outdate quickly. What really matters are the deeper, foundational skills that help us stay relevant no matter how the world shifts around us….
1. Adaptability & agility
91% of HR professionals say adaptability is more important than technical skills when hiring for the future (1)
In a world of so much change, the ability to adapt quickly is essential. As someone who has switched careers, up-skilled myself, and pivoted a business, agility has helped me flex to what is needed. It’s not always easy, but it’s a good one to master.
Action: The next time you feel resistance to a change (e.g. new tech, new process, new role), ask: what can I learn from this? Put yourself in unfamiliar situations: read outside your usual topics, join a new group, take on a stretch project.
2. Analytical thinking
73% of employers rank analytical thinking as a top skill for the next 5 years (2)
Having data is great, but knowing how to use it is better. Analytical thinkers tend to cut through noise, ask better questions, and make sense of complexity. It helps solve problems and uncover root causes. There is so much information out there—the key is knowing what to do with it.
Action: Before making any big decision, write down the assumptions behind it and then challenge each one. This builds your analytical muscle and helps you see patterns more clearly.
3. Influence & visibility
82% of employers say ability to influence is a key skill for the future (3)
Being able to communicate your ideas and get buy-in is powerful. It’s about being clear and confident, rather than loud, and helping others understand your value and ideas. Building a personal brand gives you more leverage here.
Action: Practice putting your voice out there: show your work, share what you're learning, building, or thinking on LinkedIn or in a team meeting.
4. Growth mindset & self-awareness
People with a strong growth mindset are 47% more likely to say they feel resilient and empowered in their careers (4)
The people who tend to thrive are usually those who believe they can grow. Having a growth mindset makes you more persistent and resilient. Having self-awareness with it helps you understand your own patterns and work to improve them.
Action: Get good at asking for feedback. Even asking something simple like “What’s one thing I could improve on?” can spark some really interesting insight.
5. Emotional intelligence (EQ)
90% of top performers have high emotional intelligence (5)
AI can write code or generate content, but it can’t lead a team with empathy or navigate a tough conversation. That’s where EQ comes in: the ability to understand and manage your emotions, and connect with others. In today’s world, this isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s essential.
Action: In your next conversation, practice true active listening, focussing entirely on the other person. Don’t plan your response while they’re talking, just listen!
The future is uncertain, but focussing on the right human skills means we’re ready to thrive regardless of how things unfolds. As my kids grow up in this fast-moving and unpredictable world, I want them to see that these skills are real anchors.
And the good news? We can all start building them today.
Hope this helps!
