Why personal brand is the new currency of career growth

Read time: 5 minutes

A few years ago I lived in scrubs, treating patients at a London hospital.

Fast forward a few years, and I was a strategy consultant presenting to senior executives.

A few years later, I was pitching my own tech startup to investors.

Three very different environments — medicine, consulting, and tech — but one thing I’ve learned across all of them is this: your personal brand follows you everywhere.

Join me on Wednesday 26th November at 5pm GMT for a free masterclass desinged for busy leaders looking to build a credible and visible brand. I’ll share practical strategies to help you step up, be seen, and create opportunity >>> Sign up here!

In every transition I’ve made, visibility has made the biggest difference.

When people already have a sense of who you are, how you think, and what you stand for, doors open faster.

A strong personal brand doesn’t just make you “known”, it makes you trusted.

And as we know, in today’s fickle world, trust is currency.

Here’s why leverage your brand can drive your career forward — wherever you are right now.

1. People promote who they know (not just who’s capable)

Throughout my consulting career, I worked with some exceptionally talented people — people who did great work, but when the next new project came up, they were often overlooked.

Not because they weren’t smart enough, but because no one really knew the value they brought.

The people who progressed fastest were the ones who found thoughtful, consistent ways to make themselves and their work visible.

And that visibility built credibility.

Reflection: Who currently knows the quality of your work? (And who needs to know?).

2. Visibility builds trust long before the opportunity arrives

When I transitioned from medicine into consulting, I had no traditional consulting or business background. What helped me stand out wasn’t my CV — it was my ability to communicate ideas clearly and speak confidently.

The same thing happened later when I launched my startup, Bloomful. Investors didn’t just buy into the product; they bought into me. They’d seen my writing, talks, and content — and that built trust before we’d even met.

Do this: Think about how someone new might perceive you online. What would they learn about your expertise or values in five minutes?

3. A strong brand gives you leverage during change

In my experience, career transitions are not easy. But whether you’re going for a promotion or exploring something new, visibility always helps.

Your brand gives you continuity even when your job title changes. It’s like a thread that ties your experiences together, helping people make sense of your journey.

This has definitely helped as I’ve moved through (very) different roles.

Try this: If you’re navigating a transition, what connects your past and present work? That’s your brand narrative.

4. Your brand speaks when you’re not in the room

We all want to believe our work speaks for itself — but in reality, people do. Conversations happen when you’re not there, and a strong personal brand shapes them.

I’ve had people introduce me for opportunities I never directly applied for, because they’d seen my work or content, and it sparked something. That’s the power of brand reputation: it works even when you’re not.

Reflection: What three words would you want people to use when describing you professionally? Do they reflect how you present yourself?

5. Your brand expands your options (even before you need them)

When you’re visible and respected in your space, opportunities start coming to you. Your brand becomes a magnet, attracting partnerships and roles that align with who you are.

I’ve seen this first-hand in my own career and in my clients’. Whether employed, consulting, or building something of your own, visibility multiplies your options and your agency.

Do this: Audit your digital presence. Does it reflect the level of opportunity you want next year?

The takeaway

Your personal brand isn’t a “nice to have” — it’s a career strategy.

It builds trust before you meet people, gives you leverage, and helps you move between roles more confidently.

Because the truth is, opportunities don’t just appear — they find the people who are visible enough to be found.

How I’d use LinkedIn if I wasn’t trying to sell anything
What most people miss about the platform Read time: 6 minutes Most people think LinkedIn is solely for posting content, growing an audience, or selling a service to others. And of course, it's great for all of those things. But actually, if that was all stripped away, I’d still use it. Because what I've realised is that, at its core, LinkedIn isn’t a content or sales platform. It’s a platform t...
What writing a newsletter for a year taught me
Lessons from showing up consistently (even when I didn’t feel like it) Read time: 5 minutes At the beginning of 2025, I made a simple commitment to myself: Write one newsletter a week. There was no big strategy or long-term plan. Just a personal challenge to be consistent. Some weeks it felt easy: ideas flowed, writing was straightforward, and I’d publish something without thinking too much. Ot...
The people who seem "lucky" are doing this
6 habits that create more opportunities over time Read time: 7 minutes A while ago, someone made a comment that I always seem to “be in the right place at the right time.” It made me smile, because from the outside, it can look like luck. But when I think about most of my “high points”, they actually weren’t random at all. I don’t see luck as something that just happens to you. More often, it’s...
