The one thing AI can’t replace

Why your humanity is your strongest competitive advantage

Read time: 6 minutes

A few days ago, I was reading yet another LinkedIn thread predicting how AI will reshape the next decade, especially social media.

Lot of predictions in the comments. A few debates. Some people excited, others not so much.

It struck me how much noise there still is around AI, and how quickly it can make people feel behind, or unsure about their future.

But the thought I kept coming back to was this:

AI can do many things well. But the one thing it can’t be is you.

Your lived experience.

Your perspective.

Your judgement.

Your voice.

Your story.

Your ability to build trust and human connection is your competitive advantage, and always will be.

The question isn’t whether AI will change things. It already has.

The real question is: how do we use it to amplify us and create more opportunity?

Here’s what I’ve learned about staying relevant, valuable, and future-proof, without trying to compete with “the machine”.

In my personal branding masterclass this week (watch the replay here), I announced the LinkedIn Authority Accelerator, a 5-part live delivered course starting in January to help professionals build build a visible, credible personal brand on LinkedIn. Early-bird pricing (£195) is open until next week with code EARLYBIRD, so be sure to secure your spot!

1. Go deep on one meaningful skill

AI is great at breadth, but humans still win at depth.

The people who’ll thrive aren’t the ones trying to know everything; they’re the ones going deep on one or two things. Whether it’s writing, speaking, strategy, design, data, or something else — now is the time to pick a skill and strengthen it.

AI can accelerate your learning, but your experience is what refines it and makes that skill valuable.

Try this: Choose one thing you want to be known for and commit to developing it consistently. Even 20 minutes a day compounds quickly.

2. Turn your skills into opportunities (and income)

In a world where AI can automate tasks, your uniquely human skills become more valuable. Storytelling, problem solving, emotional intelligence — these are the expertise people pay for.

And when you package it through content, workshops, consulting, or speaking, you create opportunities for yourself. The more visible you are, the easier it is for people to recognise your value and reach out.

Reflection: What’s one skill you could start sharing more openly?

3. Use AI to multiply your strengths, not replace them

I use AI every day to brainstorm, outline ideas, draft content, and speed up my thinking. But I never outsource the final product or decision. That can only come from me.

The people who’ll thrive are the ones who treat AI like a co-pilot rather than something to fear. AI does the heavy lifting. You bring the nuance and the humanity. It’s a strong combination.

Do this: Look at your workflow: where can AI save you time or help you think faster? Where can it free you up to focus on deeper, more valuable work?

4. Build a personal brand that reflects your humanity

People trust people, follow people, and buy from people. Your story, your values, and the way you think is what differentiates you.

I’ve seen this first-hand: opportunities often find the people who share their ideas and experiences publicly.

Your personal brand isn’t about being super polished — it’s about being visible. And in an AI-driven world, visibility that is authentic is a competitive edge.

Do this: Share one idea, lesson, or perspective you’ve learned recently. Don’t try to be perfect, just let people see how you think.

The takeaway

AI is transforming work, media, and the way we operate, but it can’t take your story, your experience, your perspective, your values, or your voice.

It can absolutely enhance your skills, but it can’t replace the human behind them — not yet, anyway.

The people who’ll thrive aren’t the ones competing with AI. They’re the ones who use it intelligently while doubling down on what makes them irreplaceable.

Your humanity is your advantage.

So you don’t need to be more like AI. You just need to be more like you.

Dupé

How I’d use LinkedIn if I wasn’t trying to sell anything
What most people miss about the platform Read time: 6 minutes Most people think LinkedIn is solely for posting content, growing an audience, or selling a service to others. And of course, it's great for all of those things. But actually, if that was all stripped away, I’d still use it. Because what I've realised is that, at its core, LinkedIn isn’t a content or sales platform. It’s a platform t...
What writing a newsletter for a year taught me
Lessons from showing up consistently (even when I didn’t feel like it) Read time: 5 minutes At the beginning of 2025, I made a simple commitment to myself: Write one newsletter a week. There was no big strategy or long-term plan. Just a personal challenge to be consistent. Some weeks it felt easy: ideas flowed, writing was straightforward, and I’d publish something without thinking too much. Ot...
The people who seem "lucky" are doing this
6 habits that create more opportunities over time Read time: 7 minutes A while ago, someone made a comment that I always seem to “be in the right place at the right time.” It made me smile, because from the outside, it can look like luck. But when I think about most of my “high points”, they actually weren’t random at all. I don’t see luck as something that just happens to you. More often, it’s...
